The Farewell Drifters w/The Abrams Brothers

Though it?s impossible to sidestep the bluegrass roots ? and ongoing engagement with bluegrass audiences ? that these two young groups have, they?re best viewed as exactly that: roots. Names notwithstanding, Ontario, Canada?s Abrams Brothers have probably drifted further therefrom, if only because they?ve been at it longer. Their last album, Blue On Brown, was an earnest but also convincing homage to Bob Dylan and Arlo Guthrie that took on their songs on musical turf closer to theirs than to the ?grass that John and James were raised on. The Farewell Drifters, in the meantime, recently released a melodious collection of mostly original acoustic pop called Yellow Tag Mondays that takes them considerably beyond their banjo-friendly debut ? in fact, they?ve swapped out the ol? five for a fiddle, and on them it sounds good. While plenty of younguns are staying close to the bluegrass fold, a good number are roaming, too, and this double bill catches two of the best on a steady upward arc.
