Recorded over two nights in front of a live audience in Philadelphia in the Spring of 2000, Voices On The Verge is a collaborative of four individual artists (Jess Klein, Erin McKeown, Rose Polenzani, and Beth Amsel) blending together their own distinct styles and voices to make this acoustic pop/rock/folk collective of musicians a true cohesive band. Each artist is represented on the album by three of her own songs which have been shaped and re-worked by the other three members, who add all of the accompanying instruments (Piano, Electric and Acoustic Guitar, Clarinet, Djembe (drum), Percussion) and vocal harmonies. The sharing of songs, instruments, and accompaniment produces a unique and captivating performance best described by Erin McKeown: "I like to describe it as trying on each others clothes. Five of the tracks on "Live In Philadelphia" have never been released before, and none of them have ever been available as live recordings.
